Hmm…that was easier than I thought it would be. I went to SourceForge where I found an open source SSH server, client and VNC program appropriately named OpenSSH and SSHVnc. When coupled with TightVNC, SSHVnc makes a nice remote control package.
OpenSSH was surprisingly easy to install and configure. I was sure that getting it up and running would be the Lion’s share of the work, but I just installed it, set up the password file and the groups file and connected to it on the first try. SSHVnc connected to it with no problem from within the LAN, but I wondered how easy it would be to connect via the Internet.
Trey needed this type of set-up for work and I wanted to have it for a while, too, so when I got this package installed we tried it out. He installed the clients and was able to get to my server on the first try (I obviously had to set up UPnP forwarding), warming the cockles of my heart. We put it on his server and, after he battled a previous installation of CYGWIN, was able to connect to it on the first try.
If you are in the market for an ssh server and remote control through that tunnel, I highly recommend this setup, especially since it supports SFTP.
