Every morning I get to work early to eat breakfast and read. Sound travels well in the cafeteria hallway since it’s nothing but tile and concrete walls. I passed a group of elderly volunteers who are here every day. I assume they really enjoy being here because if it’s me, there are a billion other places I’d rather be than a hospital when I grow older. At least I thought they enjoyed it until I heard one woman say in this sweet little voice as they walked behind me:
“I used to be really nice when I got here. I smiled at everyone and said hello. Fuck ‘em now.”
