OS X f’n rules. I upgraded my old G4 Sawtooth machine to 10.3 because I couldn’t wait until I can afford the new iMac G5 for Panther’s features.
Holy Crappola. It runs so well on my machine and is a hell of an operating system. Out of all my computers, this is now my favorite. OS X has beautiful interfaces, easy to understand yet powerful applications (being a network guy, the Network Utility kicks ass) and surprising application memory efficiency. There’s only one issue. I can’t get to the Internet. It can see the Win2K3 server, my WinXP machine and my Mandrake laptop but it just won’t make a connection to the Internet. WTF? Until I can get on the Internet, I can’t migrate over to use it for email (Thunderbird 1.0 just got released) and general daily use. Damn it.
Some nice things: Safari looks pretty decent but it’s going to have a difficult time convincing me to use it over Firefox. The chess game included is pretty sweet since I love chess, but I haven’t played in a while and I’m getting beat up. The biggest surprise for me was how well OS X plays DVDs vs WinXP.
When I play a DVD on my 3.0GHz XP box and do anything else on the machine, the video gets choppy everytime the processor gets hit. On my 400MHz OS X box, I opened 3 applications at the same time before the video started skipping. I was able to work on some things while watching “Family Guy” with no skips.
Man, I can’t wait to get that iMac now. If anyone’s feeling generous, help a man out.
