Like Homer Simpson on new billboard day, I think I’ve fallen for the blitz advertising and media coverage of the iPod nano. I want one and I want one NOW. I know you’re thinking this is a rash decision but hear me out as I rationalize reason this out loud.
Over a year ago when I bought the iPod 20GB (4th gen), the retail agent told me the battery doesn’t have very good longevity and it will drastically lose its charge in about a year. I should buy their extended protection service to offset the fact that I’ll need to buy a new one in a year. Typical sales tactic! Everyone’s trying to make a buck in the new world of razor-thin margins. Fuck you I thought to myself. Well, it’s a bit over one year and I have noticed this in the past few weeks: If I don’t recharge my iPod everyday, it’s dead in 2 days whether I use it or not. That bastard trying to make a buck was right! He fucked me by not pushing hard enough is what I said to myself today. Even if I had the service, I’d still have to consider buying the nano, though.
My iPod has been great for working out and taking the bus for work but it still is a bit bulky for the workouts. I’ve been considering buying a smaller flash player expressly for this reason, but I’ve just been too lazy to look for something. Now that it’s a, uh, necessity and the incredible timing of Apple releasing this gem, I believe it’s destiny. I went to the Apple store to look at it and was instantly mesmerized. Aside from the capacity, it has everything my iPod does with the addition of color so I’ll be buying one once the Apple store gets the black 4GB unit in this week. I can also keep using the other iPod for work as long as I keep it plugged in so it’s not a total loss, right?
[Update 11:45pm: I am such a Homer Simpson. Shortly after writing this I ordered the nano from Apple's website. Impulse buying at its best.]

The new version of iTunes is out (ver 5.0) and it has a new, sleek interface. I just installed it and if I find anything crappy about it, I’ll let you know.
