What kinda gadget weenie would I be if I didn’t talk about the iPhone? I got to play with one today since someone at work got one that day it came out. The only thing I like more than buying expensive gadgets is when friends buy expensive gadgets and I get to live vicariously through them.
My first impression is that it is smaller than it looks in the photos. With all the media photograph “trickery” being used these days, it’s difficult to determine exactly how big things are. You know what I’m talking about - using the guy with extremely large hands to show off just how “small” the original Blackberries were when, in reality, there were breakdancers in the 80’s holding smaller boomboxes up to their heads. It was also surprisingly hefty. I say “surprisingly” because after seeing how thin and small it was, the weight caught me off guard, but it still seems lighter than my Blackberry.
The screen really amazes me. I want a TV with the same functionality - I haven’t quite figured out how it works but I also haven’t thought about it too much or lost sleep over it, either. It’s just cool. I do wonder how it would work if you put a screen protector over it. Due to all the hype and commercials I won’t bore you with the functionality but I do think one drawback is that the screen picks up all the fingerprints you leave while navigating through EVERYTHING. This will cause one to constantly wipe it off leading me to again wonder if it would work with a screen protector over it. Oh, another drawback for me personally is that typing is a bit difficult since I’m used to the tactile feel of the Blackberry keyboard. I might get used to it if I had to, though.
Watching movies on the iPhone is pretty cool. The widescreen aspect is great and the sound is impressive. The only problem I see with it is keeping people from looking over your shoulder. 8GB seems a bit meager for movies and music, too, but I’m sure someone will hack that soon.
Hmmm…maybe I’ll stop talking about it or else I’ll end up buying one. No, $600 is just too much for a device. Especially on AT&T’s Edge network (upgrade your shit already!). And no GPS. Maybe version 2 will have GPS and be offered on EVDO? Only 5 short years until the exclusivity runs out…
